This program offers a more focused and in-depth approach to desensitization than what is typically included in colt starting. It is designed for horses that are:
- Naturally spooky, nervous, or anxious
- Struggling with specific triggers (bags, tarps, flags, fly spray, etc.)
- Being prepared for parades, mounted patrol, or other high-stimulation environments
- Already broke but lacking desensitization work
- Young (ages 1–4) and not yet started under saddle but in need of safe, confidence-building groundwork
Minimum: 2 weeks (additional weeks can be added as needed)
Recommended: 30 days
What to Expect – Horses Already in My Program
Horses with a minimum of 30 days in my training program already have a solid foundation and basic exposure, so they begin advanced desensitization immediately.
This course includes:
- Progressive groundwork, starting simple and gradually increasing intensity
- Liberty work to build trust, responsiveness, and follow-through without pressure
- Ground-to-saddle desensitization (if under saddle), reinforcing calmness under the rider
- Introduction to and desensitization around a wide variety of stimuli, including:
- Tarps, bags, flags, fly spray, mattresses, hanging obstacles
- Loud noises, music, vehicles, smoke, campfire smells, dogs, goats, and other animals
- Unusual textures/objects underfoot (mud, brush, water, etc.)
- Obstacle work, including dragging and pulling objects, walking over/through various terrain
- Full-body and leg/feet desensitization
- Customizable exposure to specific objects/triggers (as available) based on your request
- Teaching “spook in place” behavior to encourage safe, thoughtful responses
- Standing still and thinking through high-adrenaline or uncomfortable situations

Horses not previously in my program will receive everything listed above. However, if they need reinforcement in basic handling, tying, or groundwork, those areas will be prioritized before moving into the advanced desensitization portion.
Daily Training Duration
- Each horse is worked 5 days a week.
- Minimum training time is 1 hour per day, tailored to each horse’s needs.
- Total daily interaction/training time may range from 1 to 5 hours, broken up into increments, not a continuous block of time.
- Tying practice: 15 minutes to 1 hour per day (solid time and/or broken up into increments).
- Basic handling and care
- Groundwork and training exercises
- Riding sessions, when appropriate
- If a horse does well and progresses within their minimum training time, no additional work may be needed that day.
- If more support or development is needed, additional time will be provided accordingly.
- Be rescheduled for a different time during the same day when conditions improve
- Be made up on weekends when needed
At the conclusion of this course, my goal is to develop a horse that is:
- Confident, calm, and mentally engaged
- Willing, soft, and connected
- Comfortable working in stimulating or unpredictable environments
- Able to trust their handler/rider and respond with thoughtfulness, not fear
